Self Help Center

Restoring Hope for Healing Minds

About Our Services

Adult Peer Support - Self Help Center is a drop-in center that hosts self help groups, workshops, educational events, and social activities for people who are living with mental illness. The Center provides structured and scheduled, as well as, informal activities that promote socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, development of strong support systems, and community living skills. Self Help Center maintains adequate staff to enable a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment in which mental health consumers* (members) can meet together and provide mutual support.

Self Help Center services are targeted to all consumers: those who are functioning well, but would just like a weekly support group or opportunities to socialize; those who are coming out of a crisis situation and need to attend more regularly; as well as those consumers who are dealing with severe and persistent mental illness and need a structured program. We welcome individuals who may have co-occurring (substance abuse) disorders.

Self Help Center operates Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with additional events or activities as scheduled.

Consumers (members) actively participate in decision-making and the operation of programs through participation on the organization's Board of Directors, Advisory Board, various committees, Facilitator meetings, and monthly Town Hall Meetings. Self Help Center also provides activities that may include meals, snacks, art and other recreational/leisure activities in addition to educational seminars, and both informal and formal peer support meetings.

The purpose of Self Help Center is to provide an opportunity for consumers (members) to direct their own recovery and advocacy process and to teach and support each other in the acquisition and exercise of skills needed for management of symptoms and for utilization of resources within the community.

*NOTE: A mental health consumer is any individual who has been diagnosed with a mental illness or is experiencing symptoms of a mental illness. You need not have had a mental health assessment; however, it is encouraged if you are experiencing symptoms to seek professional assistance from a trained mental health practitioner.
